Evacuation Day is a Massachusetts civic observance commemorating the British evacuation of Boston in 1776 after the Siege of Boston. Schools and government offices close in Suffolk County, Cambridge, and Somerville. The holiday coincides with Saint Patrick's Day, a coincidence that helped establish the observance.
